ARTIST STATEMENT

The key motivation behind my work is exploring boundaries. How far can I create playful interactive sculptures with viewers that surprise, unease, shock, encourage or remind them. Not only do I explore boundaries with viewers, I also like to push my own boundaries by using new materials and processes which can make a sculpture structurally challenging. Often juxtaposing the material and structure in a playful manner. Creating sculpture that people can have a relationship or communicate with is a key drive within my practice, alongside returning sculptures into their natural environment, such as the street, parks or alleyways. Engaging with a new type of audience, attracting those who wouldn’t necessarily be attracted to art or usually see an art piece in that location. Since interaction is a key aspect within my work, the sense of touch is significant as the viewer has a one-to-one experience with the piece.

ARTIST BIOGRAPHY

Eve Bell was born in Lincolnshire, England and studied art in Royal Leamington Spa, in which her early performance work is based in. The artist is currently in her final year of her undergraduate degree at the Slade School of Fine Art. In February 2022 Eve Bell was part of collaborative exhibition named ‘Chroma’ located in Shoreditch, which included female undergraduate students at the Slade School of Fine Art. Bell displayed the Sculpture ‘Undulations’, a hand-carved game-like wood sculpture which was successfully interacted by many viewers. The carvings create a strong sense of movement alongside challenging materials taking on a new form. The concave carvings clearly left an impression on viewers as they were familiar with the material of wood but not in its new smooth state.

From a very young age Eve Bell was exposed to a practical method of work by her father. Her family never had any practical jobs on the house by a professional and every variety of job was done by her father including electrical, plumbing, construction, mechanical. A core memory in her childhood is Bell and her Father building the log store shed from scratch. The techniques of assembling and using material have aided her into constructing sculptures creatively and finding new ways to create reactions and interactions from viewers.

Eve Bell recently discovered her Grandfather also attended Art School (Hornsy School of Art) in London however he was taken away from the arts world when his mother found nude life drawings in his portfolio. The artist believes without realising she has followed his lost footsteps he may have taken.
