‘CHAIR SERIES’

Year: 2023

Found wooden chairs altered.

This sculpture is part of a duo series, the chair can slot into any 90° right angle, without the stability of the wall the chair is deficient and incomplete. I like the idea of this sculpture in its new state can be suited to any environment and change the atmosphere of any space it is taken into. It can be disguised amongst many chairs/furniture or be placed solo without thought. Furniture, especially chairs, are used for one purpose and often not taken cared for or really thought about. This sculpture changes this stereotypical narrative and exposes the viewer, alongside challenging their natural drive to sit on it. The chair no longer is sat on but sitting!

This sculpture is part of a duo series, the chair can slot onto the circumference of a pillar within my studio representing the ‘forth leg’. The chair challenges the roles of functional and dysfunctional, its primary purpose is redirected into finding a successful pillar to fit for functional standing whilst its main purpose; sitting is now dysfunctional. Its tactile appearance almost suggests someone has taken a section from the corner, the overall form and character of the sculpture changes immediately if placed in conjunction with another article or stood solo. This sculpture in comparison to the other item in the duo series, is more selective with its intended partner. Not every pillar can fit into the cut-out shape and creates a narrative in its journey to find the perfect fit.
